THE 2005 NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE
REQUIRES UL EXPOSED RUN (-ER) COMPLIANCE
FOR CABLES EXTENDING FROM CABLE TRAYS

The recently released National Electrical Code (NEC, 2005) amends the way cable should be extended out of cable trays. Once limited to the use of metal clad (MC) cables or metal conduit, the 2005 Code - specifically Section 725.61 (D) (4) for Power Limited Tray Cable (PLTC), and Section 336.10(7) for Tray Cable (TC) - permits the use of UL Exposed Run (-ER) Compliant cable.

600 Volt Type TC Tray Cables that meet or surpass required crush and impact test criteria as per the 2005 NEC Code, Section 336.10(7) are marked "TC-ER".

Type PLTC Cables that are certified to meet crush and impact resistance test requirements are marked "Open Wiring" or "Open Wire" as per the 2005 NEC Code, Section 725.61(D)(4).

For both TC Tray Cables and PLTC Cables, the NEC Code now allows unlimited length runs to extend from the tray, assuming the Code requirements for local mechanical protection are observed. (The length of the permitted run depends upon the specific Code adopted by the locality. If the locality continued to conform to the 2002 NEC Code, then there is a 50-ft. length restriction for PLTC cable.)

Alpha Wire Company now provides a solution to this unique application through the Alpha Wire INDUSTRIAL SERIES: SERIES F, SERIES M, SERIES P, SERIES L and SERIES V.

High Performance Flexible Automotive Control Cable meets the demand for severe flexing applications where superior resistance to oils and chemicals is mandatory. SERIES F cable products offer maximum service life in single axis rolling flex applications as well as limited torsion applications in accordance with MIL-C-13777G. Product performance is field application proven at over 20 million continuous rolling flex cycles at a minimum bend radius of 10X OD and a Tic-Toc/Twist Test per MIL-C-13777G. SERIES F is now UL Listed Type TC-ER (600 Volt), PLTC Open Wiring (300 Volt), Sunlight Resistant, Oil Resistant I/II and CSA/AWM 600 Volt FT-4 and compliant.
High Performance Stationary Automotive Control Cable for stationary/cable tray and minimal flexing applications and where superior resistance to oils and chemicals is mandatory. SERIES M multiconductor cable products offer superior performance in static applications because they are resistant to oils and chemicals found in most manufacturing environments. SERIES M is now UL Listed Type TC-ER (600 Volt), PLTC Open Wiring (300 Volt), Direct Burial, Sunlight Resistant and CSA/AWM 600 Volt FT-4 and compliant.
Enhanced, High Performance Stationary Automotive Control Cable meets the demand for minimal flex and severe oil and chemical resistant tray cable applications. SERIES P cables offer high performance, specially formulated thermoplastic elastomer jacketing in a high-visibility yellow color. SERIES P cable is also available in orange and black jackets. SERIES P is UL Exposed Run (-ER) compliant, UL Listed Type TC (600 Volt), PLTC (300 Volt), Sunlight Resistant, Oil Resistant I/II and CSA/AWM 600 Volt FT-4 and compliant.

Composite Input/Output Industrial Twinax and Control Cable is designed for use on PLC controlled automation equipment where data transmission and control power are combined in one cable, therefore reducing weight and cable space. Installation costs are reduced and downtime is significantly reduced in such applications as machine tools, robots, pick-and-place units and conveyor systems. SERIES L cables utilize Belden 9463 Blue Hose™ 300 Volt or Belden YR29281 600 Volt which is approved for use within Rockwell/Allen Bradley control automation systems. SERIES L is now UL Listed Type TC-ER (600 Volt) PLTC Open Wiring (300 Volt), Direct Burial, Sunlight Resistant, Oil Resistant I and CSA/AWM 300 Volt, FT-1 and compliant.

Enhanced Design, High Performance Small Diameter Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Cables for long service life performance in Variable Frequency Drive Motor applications requiring resistance to voltage spikes caused by reflected waves, harmonic distortion and voltage irregularities which could result in a potential corona discharge and ultimately conductor insulation breakdown. SERIES V Enhanced Design VFD cables are designed to provide Drive System reliability to reduce or eliminate downtime. Specially formulated XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) insulated conductors provide excellent low capacitance and thermoset properties that ensure excellent system performance. SERIES V is UL Listed Type TC-ER (600 Volt), UL 1000 Volt Flexible Motor Supply Cable and Exposed Run (-ER) Rated for use in and outside of cable carrying trays without the use of conduit or expensive metal clad cables, Direct Burial, Sunlight Resistant, CSA AWM I/II A/B 90°C XHHW-2, FT-4 and compliant.
